What are the Pros and Cons of Studying MBBS in USA

Every time a student ponders upon the idea of moving abroad to study, the USA is the first thought to many. ‘The American Dream’ sways a lot of people and it comes with its own set of desirable qualities. The United States of America today is one of the most popular and talked about countries in the world. Hence, it is only inevitable to consider it the first option to pursue an undergraduate course at.

Some of the benefits of studying in USA are universal, that is, they remain common across all fields. Being a developed country and one of the most powerful nations, it opens up an ample of opportunities to anyone who goes there. From highly-advanced infrastructure to leading experts for guidance, this country provides the adept student with all that is required for optimum growth. Of course, such benefits come with hefty pay as well. The most obvious being monetary losses while other things such as cultural differences, climate and missing out on family events may be troublesome.

MBBS, an undergraduate course in medicine and surgery, is one of the most sought after degrees in India, as well as other parts of the globe. Every year, more than 15 lakhs students take part in the entrance examinations, yet the seats are very limited – about 70,000 at most. Others have to opt for more expensive options, and in the wake of such a moment, most parents and students believe it to be best to invest in education outside of the country with an internationally recognized and well-famed degree. As a consequence, many students apply to USA for education in the medical sciences every year.

Completing an education in medicine in the United States of America comes with its own personal benefits and challenges, largely due to the fact that being a doctor is a serious business. All countries take it very seriously and thus have their own norms regarding who can and cannot be a licensed doctor.

ADVANTAGES

  1. Premium Education: A student studying in one of the top universities in America also gets the most top-notch education. This country holds some of the most prestigious universities in the entire world with the most premium educators. The best part is that it’s curriculum is designed in such a way so as to make the student adept not only theoretically but also make them skilled practically. Apart from technical knowledge, it equips student with the required ability to face the challenges and stress that come with the responsibility of being a professional doctor.
  2. International Recognition: This premium education is not a secret. Hence, most countries accept a degree from USA’s top medical colleges and allow their doctors to practice in the country after certain proceedings. This opens a door to ample opportunities for the student, especially one who is unclear about future prospects.
  3. Diversity in Social Connections: The greatest asset we have as humans are other humans. With education, a network is just as important to progress in career as well as in life. USA attracts many immigrants and has a lot of cultural diversity, especially when it comes to colleges. It allows the student to open his/her mind to think wider and to make global connections; with people belonging to all types of cultures, backgrounds and histories.
  4. Easier Jobs in US: When a student is educated in a country, the application process and the chances of acceptability are higher in that particular country. If a student aspires to live in the US, it is best to start early and opt for an education in the country, which will then conveniently pave a path to thrive in that country. Other than that, applying to other countries also becomes easier. Since the student already holds an international experience, one is bound to believe that they can handle movies to a country and perform well.

DISADVANTAGES

  1. High Cost: Not only the costs involved in education but the cost of living is also incredibly high in the US. As the price of the dollar continues to grow, so are the costs within the country. Such an exponential rise in expenses every year for a student can be unreasonable to deal with. Considering the current status quo of the Indian economy, the average Indian income will not be able to sustain a child in the USA and thus, narrows down the option to the elite few. Other than that, the application process that does not promise any form of admission, can also be a costly affair. All hope is not lost as other may find the option of applying for scholarships or student loan.
  2. High Competition: If tens of lakhs of students within India apply to NEET, the universities in USA with global reach receive even more applicants. Since the students applying also come from different countries and past different education patterns, the competition gets tougher. While Indians may have an edge over some countries based on its firm hold on the education system, some countries also have an edge over India’s education system. It can sometimes be a gamble. A rigorous admission process becomes a cherry on the top.
  3. Curriculum Differences: Most Indian applicants are only familiar with the MBBS structure in India while the study of medicine is vastly different in the US. When in India, a student can become a licensed doctor after only 5 years of education, in America a student needs to go through four years of pre-med education and then four years of an MD programme to become a licensed doctor.

While these are the core advantages and disadvantages of an education in medicine in the US, know that there are always more nit-bits. One student may find the Visa process to be a hassle while another may find it a smooth-sailing process. Either ways, all disadvantages can be tackled with and it is always worth the effort.

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
