The UK may lift the work-hour limit for international students?

According to reports, international students may be allowed to work longer hours.

A total of 6, 80,000 international students in the UK are permitted to work for 20 hours per week, but the government is considering raising the work-hour limit to 30 hours or eliminating it.

Since the pandemic, the United Kingdom has faced a labour shortage and an economic downturn. There are 1.3 million vacant positions, and job vacancies are increasing, according to sources. 

Chancellor Jermy Hunt has also expressed an interest in improving the workflow. To combat inflation caused by high vacancy rates.

Suella Braverman is also planning to reduce the number of foreigners entering the country, which could be accomplished by reducing the graduate route visa from two years to six months.

Many people, including university stakeholders and members of the Bravermans party, criticized this proposal. The departments of education and international trade are both opposed to reducing the length of post-study visas.

 

Directors of Universities UK International have expressed concern about the proposal to allow students to work longer hours in addition to their studies, claiming that this could negatively impact students’ well-being and learning experience.

He believes that 6, 80,000 international students can impact and contribute to our country’s economy, and that the government should maintain competitive post-study work and recommit to the recent speculation about reducing the graduate route visa.

 

Both Canada and Australia removed working hour limits in 2022 to address labour shortages, but there are concerns that this may distract students from their studies.
