Allopathic medical career is one of the most rewarding profession across Globe. ROADMAP TO COMPLETE MBBS IN USA

The pattern for medical study is completely different in USA and India. To get admission in MBBS in USA the student must have obtained degree of bachelor of science program before applying for admission to medical college in USA.

THE STANDARD ROUTE TO MBBS IN USA

Great number of students appear for MCAT from USA and many other countries to get admission to top medical colleges. The exam is held for admission in more than 350 medical universities in USA. It is a tough and very competitive exam which is monitored by AMMC (Association of American Medical Colleges). The scores are also released by AMMC.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE FOR ADMISSION TO MBBS IN USA

It is quite expensive for Indian as well as the local students to find their place in the top medical colleges in USA through MCAT. This has led to increase in popularity of MBBS colleges for Indian students in Caribbean Islands. However, the universities in Caribbean Islands provide education for initial 3.5 years and rest would be completed in mainland of USA.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND ROADMAP TO COMPLETE MBBS+PG IN USA

The National Board of Medical Examination conducts various examinations and allow you to become a licensed practitioner in USA. There are 3 steps to complete the process:

1. After the completion of the pre medical, the students have to go through 4 years of Bachelor level program leading to M.D. degree. On completion of first 2 years of this course the students in USA need to give an exam namely USMLE-1. After clearing USMLE-1 students can make choice between university in USA or in Caribbean university.

The MD degree is equivalent to MBBS in USA and is not equivalent to PG in India.

2. Now the students can appear for USMLE-2 which is a computer-based examination. The last part step2 CS which is given from USA and it is a practical exam. Students from top medical universities in USA pass the exam without any problem as it is not a competitive exam.
3. The doctor of medicine works for around 3 to 6 years. However, the number of years also depend on the specialization chosen. After giving licensing exam students become eligible to work as a doctor or a medical practitioner in USA.

EARNING BACK IN PG WHAT YOU SPENT AT MBBS LEVEL

At PG level the student start earning around US $ 4000- US $5500 for next 3-4 years. The hospital takes care of living cost and also gives back the money that you spent during the bachelor program. The time duration of completing MBBS in USA is same as time duration of completing MBBS in India that is around 9 years.

SUCCESS RATIO

Around 36,000 students out of 42,000 students qualify to available residency seats of 29,000. There are great chances of qualifying this USMLE-1. However in India there are about 1,17,000 students appear for NEET PG. out of which only 20,000 qualify the exam.

WHAT IS USMLE?

USMLE stands for united states medical licensing Examination. It is a 3 step exam series that must be cleared by the individuals who wants to practice medicine in USA. It is a common system to evaluate individuals for medical license. The 2 organisations that sponsor the exams are

1. The federation of state medical boards (FSMB)
2. National board of medical examiners (ECFMG)

SCORING

Step 1, step 2 Ck and Step 3 are each scored on a 1-300 scale. Students can compare score of each year -that is step 1 : 2013 scores to step 1 : 2014 scores – but not between the different steps.

Minimum passing scores for 2015 are:

• STEP 1: 194
• STEP 2: 209
• STEP 3: 190

• WHAT IS THE FORMAT? Computer based test

STEP 2: (CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE)

• WHAT IS TESTED? Ability to use clinical science knowledge
• WHEN IS IT TAKEN? Mainly taken during 3^rd and 4^th year of medical school
• HOW LONG IS THE EXAM? One day , 9 hours
• HOW MANY QUESTIONS ARE THERE? 320 multiple choice questions
• WHAT IS THE FORMAT? Computer based

STEP 2: (CLINICAL SKILLS)

• WHAT IS TESTED? Clinical skills applied to standardized patient scenarios.
• WHEN IS IT TAKEN? Taken in 4^th year of medical school
• HOW LONG IS THE EXAM? One day , 8 hours
• WHAT IS FORMAT? 12 Patient cases, 15 minutes of interaction with patient and 10 minutes to record notes for each case

STEP 3:

• WHAT IS TESTED? Ability to apply clinical sciences to patients
• WHEN IS IT TAKEN? After the medical school graduation
• HOW LONG IS THE EXAM? 2 Days
