How is MBBS in US Different from MBBS in India?

Medical aspirants in India are often overwhelmed by the variety of options that are presented to them while applying for an undergraduate program. Students that just finished schooling or are about to have whatsoever no real exposure to the medical field and its prospective. The first step to taking a life-altering decision is to figure out whether the student wishes to study in India or abroad. The decision is to be taken before preparation because both the application process and, the course structure and curriculum differ from country to country. One must prepare as per the application process of a country and its pre-requisites. One of the most popular options among Indians for studying abroad in the United States of America, predominantly because of its English-speaking population, which most Indians are fluent in, and its economic well-being.

However, the curriculum of medicine and its pre-requisites are vastly different in the USA. India has adopted its education system from its British past, like several other commonwealth countries. The USA, having shared a different culture and history, has developed its own education system, unlike British colonies. The key aspects to look into before applying are:

  • Eligibility Criteria
  • Total Cost
  • The Scope of Medicine

Other aspects one may want to look into are climatic conditions, cultural barriers, and understanding the laws. Generally, these aspects do not become a hindrance and are usually looked at once a student has opted for applying to the country in the form of additional information.

Eligibility Criteria and the Admission Process

INDIA

In India, the average duration of an undergraduate program is 5.5 years, where the academic is distributed in 9 semesters with 1 year of rotatory internship. This program is popularly known as MBBS, which stands for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and is the first professional level education in the country. Anyone graduating with an MBBS degree has the option to practice across the nation as a licensed doctor or study further.

The admissions in India happen through a national level exam known as NEET. This exam comprises of 180 questions with a total of 720 marks, where a minimum score of 500 is recommended. NEET is a three hours long exam divided into four sections – Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.

USA

In contrast to this, the first level of Education in the US is not its first professional degree. Before applying for medical sciences, popularly known as an MD (Doctor of Medicine), every applicant must have an additional four years of undergrad education post-schooling in relevant fields. This minimum four-year-long study is known as Pre-med education and does not deem the student to be a licensed doctor in the country. After pre-med, studying MD is also a four-year-long affair.

The admission in America is based on an MCAT exam. There are different versions of MCAT, where the total score ranges from 472-528. Most applicants should have a score of about 500-505. The marking system of MCAT is not similar to NEET and is not absolute. MCAT is a 7.5 hours long exam which is also divided into four sections – Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behaviour and; Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills.

In private colleges, it may be as high as INR 45-50 lakhs, while an NRI seat costs USD 75000 (about INR 57 lakhs). The living costs in India in the metropolitan cities would be around INR 25,000 in average scenarios.

USA

It also depends on various factors such as the city or state one is in, where the students opt for residence and the desired amount of luxury. Worthy students can get full or partial scholarships but the USA is very high in demand for its medical courses, the competition is international and unbelievably high.

Why USA?

Client Testimonial

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
