Universities discount fees for international students stuck outside Australia

The coronavirus breakdown has worsened things throughout the world. The most affected domain I can say is the education of the student, although there are a lot in numbers but on which I give more emphasis is the education domain.

In the year 2019, students who have planned and been enrolled in different courses in foreign countries are stuck now and they are attending online classes because of the border closure.

So to compensate for the loss of students the Universities across Australia are offering a discount of up to 20% to international students who are completing their courses completely online because of the border closure.

Major Universities providing discounts to the students are: –

  • The University of Adelaide is offering a rebate of up to 20% for 1 semester this year to the students.
  • The University of Queensland is offering a rebate of 12.5% for the students in the same situation.
  • The University of Newcastle is offering a 20% fee waiver this year.
  • Charls strut university is offering the discount of 30% for the overseas students.

These universities are providing a rebate to the students who are unable to travel to Australia due to border closures, and have to be in their home country.

It is not certain up to when the things will back on track so to hold the enrolment of students the universities are using discounting criteria and for new sign-ups also. And to convey this message to students they are giving an update to their universities webpages with the message of “do not delay your study plans- start studying online and complete your studies in Australia when border open. For students who commence studies online and offshore, we are offering a discount of up to 20%”.

As per the data from different sources it was discovered that as of 10 January, approx. 130000 students who already had enrolled in Australia were still stranded in other countries.

And the enrolment of new international students had fallen 25% compared to last year.

Some scholarship plans were also been formed by the universities. Stated below: –

  • The university of Adelaide has established a new international student scholarship for 2021 that can give eligible students between 15% and 30% discounts over the life of their degrees.
  • Any international student with equivalent of an Australian tertiary admission rank of 80 will receive 15% scholarship and a student with over 90 admission rank will get a discount of 30%.

‘Students do not need to apply for the scholarship it will automatically awarded to them who are eligible.’

Moving on, there were some marking statements we have those were given by some reputated  people.

Statement by ‘Varun Kale’ the international student officer at the National Union of Students, has said  said it was only fair to give discounts to international students who spent 2020 studying overseas, because they were missing out on in-person education.

“For me, that is the only way that unis can get students, for now at least,” he said. “They should be offering some sort of discount, at least to get some attention, to say to students, ‘We are doing something, it would be great to enrol.’”

But he said discounts should increase and be offered at other universities where students are still paying full price.

“They should give more,” Kale said. “I am an engineering student [and], for me, practical knowledge is everything. If I don’t get that experience – what is the point of paying that amount, even if I am getting a 20% discount?

“From the last two semesters online, the students have complained they haven’t learned the practical knowledge they are supposed to. Many are planning on dropping their studies or under-loading.”

A spokesman for the University of Technology Sydney said it was “not considering” offering similar discounts.

The University of Queensland’s rebate scheme also applied last year, during semester 2 of 2020. A spokeswoman said more than half of all international students at that time, both new and continuing, studied online in their home country.

For 2021, she said, 80% of new international students for semester 1 were offshore.

“Applications from international students are tracking at similar levels to last year, but the uncertainty about travel is likely to affect how many defer or decline their offers,” she said.

These schemes and scholarships are presented in front of student to sustain the old enrolled students and also the new enrolled students. These moves by universities will ensure the students for continuity of their study .

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
