Reservation for in-service doctors: Gujarat’s new policy

Many medical graduates start their service, without pursuing specialized PG, after completing their graduation itself. Most of them will continue their service from internship itself, who later will find difficult to go for PG education. Now, as a support to these unspecialized doctors, Gujarat government has come with a new policy – to provide 10% reservation for in-service doctors in PG courses. 

According to the Health Department, the policy will provide 10% reservation for in-service doctors from district and taluk hospitals, in getting admission for PG medical courses. The in-service doctors will be from various specializations, including,

• TB and Chest
• Orthopedics
• Pediatrics
• Obstetrics and Gynecology
• General Surgery and Medicine
• Preventive and Social Medicine

The specializations in Pathology, Radiology and Anesthetics are not included in the list.

The Health Department has also declared category wise reservation and other criteria for the reservation. The policy will be implemented from the 2022-23 academic year. Also, the service is bond-based, which demand completion of service duration at any cost. If anyone fails to complete the total time period, they will be demanded to pay 25% of their bond (25% of 4lakh, i.e. 10lakh). The details of reservation matrix and eligibility is like the following
