Reason behind opting for other career options except NEET

A medical student of Jammu and Kashmir has completed MBBS programme in the year 2021 and took the Public Service Commission (PSC) Examinations. Many students like him who want to do postgraduate are trying to go to abroad and preparing for the UK or US exams. Several reasons are there behind these decisions. Postponement of exam procedure has led the students of Union Territory by one year which is a massive loss for them. The competition for a few seats is intense and increasing day by day. In due course of time, Jammu and Kashmir was included in the AIQ (All India Quota) from 2022.

Jammu-Kashmir NEET AIQ

In the middle of July along with NEET PG merit list publication, all Jammu-Kashmir colleges of medicine were added in AIQ. 50% seats of government medical colleges of Jammu and Kashmir as well as 100% seats of SKIMS (Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences) which is a deemed university were included in AIQ. This decision had led to protests all over the Union Territory.

With the revocation of Article 370 as well as depletion of statehood, inclusion of the medical seats into the AIQ was obligatory. According to the students, this decision was not taken in such a hurry.

The PG seats are very less in Jammu and Kashmir. Total of 542 seats are present in three medical colleges. The students spoke about the drastic declination of clinical seats as 100 % seats of SKIMS are included in AIQ. Only 170 seats are at hand for around 1400 cadets. According to the student’s point of view, everyone desire for a clinical seat but no one wants to do research and development. 

No Extra seats in NEET PG

Although there is an increase in undergraduate medical seats but the postgraduate seats remain the same. Moreover, the union government has started 5 new colleges of medicine which have got permission for UG programmes by 2021. The colleges are GMC Anantnag, GMC Rajouri, GMC Baramulla, GMC Doda and GMC Kathua.

The students announced lack of staff in the new GMCs which has enforced the government to shift professors from the existing GMCs. The enhancement of seats fully depends on the increase in number of faculties.

No bond term in NEET

Unlike other states, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir need not require the students to sign bonds. This is the reason for which students from other states of India may apply to escape from their programme. 

GMC Kathua possesses only two or three consultants and they have to control all the works in the hospital. Junior residents are utilised as senior residents in the GMC. Crisis has begun in the medical colleges and they do not have sufficient doctors. In rest of the states they have to expend two or three years to work in the state itself. The existence of bond system in other states meant that students of Jammu and Kashmir who are studying outside the union territory will not be allowed to fill the vacancies earlier to bond completion.

One Year Loss for MBBS Students:

Along with the lack of seats, medical candidates of Jammu and Kashmir are disturbed by the postponement of the GMCs exams. Many batches had to take NEET PG exams one year delayed from the rest of the country due to postponement of exams in GMCs. According to the students of Jammu and Kashmir, they graduate a year later and they are lagging behind too. This is the vital issue faced by the students. The GMCs keep the exams for one month and declare the results after three or four months which leads to end of almost one year. 

Migrate Abroad:

The deficiency of PG students along with the delay of exams has led the students of Jammu and Kashmir to move abroad to study medicine. They have the propensity to flee abroad. Moreover, people tend to migrate in UK and US not to waste their valuable years of their life.
