Choose the right course for you or choose the right course

It is a dream of many students to become a doctor since childhood. Hence they choose the medical stream (PCB) after class 10th. The basic thing that we get reminded of for getting a “doctor” tag is a MBBS degree. Many assume that MBBS is the only course to become a doctor due to their limited knowledge in this stream, hence they end up narrowing their options.

Yet there are other options available out there in medicine besides MBBS (and in allied medicine too. The best among them are BDS, BAMS and BHMS. Thus if you are confused on choosing the right one for you and still stuck in only one course, go through this article. This assists you in choosing the right path by giving a brief detail on the major differences between these courses.

We’ll begin with the basics.

Abbreviation – MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS

After BDS: Dentist, Dental Surgeon, Endodontic, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist, Oral Surgeon, Orthodontic, Paedodontic, etc.

Higher Studies: MBBS vs BDS vs BAMS vs BHMS

After MBBS:

After completing your MBBS, you can either go for an MS (postgraduate degree in general surgery) or an MD (postgraduate degree in general medicine). You have to clear the NEET PG or other university and state level exams to get an admission.

After BDS:

After completing your BDS, students can pursue MDS (Master of Dental Surgery). All India Post Graduate Dental Entrance Exam (AIPGDEE) is a national level exam and the eligibility criteria to get admitted. You can also pursue MBA in Public Health and MBA in Hospital Management after BDS.

After BAMS:

A BAMS graduate can opt for an MD or MS in Ayurveda after completing the degree. They can also pursue higher studies in many medical-related disciplines. Some of the choices are Master’s in Public Health, Master’s in Health Administration, Post Graduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine and many other postgraduate courses.

After BHMS:

The common choice for higher studies by the BHMS graduates is MD in Homeopathy. Many students also select other courses in medicine, such as Master of Science in Regenerative Medicine, Master of Science in Psychiatry, Master of Science in Endocrinology, Master of Hospital Management, etc.

Further doctoral level education (Doctor of Medicine) is also available after completing master’s in each of these courses.

Though there are plenty of career opportunities after each of the courses, MBBS is class apart in the current scenario. All the major surgeries and treatments follow allopathic medicine and thus MBBS doctors. BDS is anyways restricted to dental treatment.  BAMS and BHMS though are regarded highly , truth remains that when anyone is running 102 fever or heart attack, you would rush to allopathic aka MBBS doctor.

What should you opt for?

MBBS: Be it private or government sector, an MBBS degree has its own perks. Along with a rich salary package, one gains respect and acknowledgement for their skills. The medical field is almost filled by doctors with MBBS qualifications. Hence you can opt for MBBS if you can work hard and stay determined to get into the most competitive course in India.

BDS: There are wide career opportunities after graduating from BDS. If you are confident to deal with the patients, it is even advisable to set up private practice. Those interested in teaching can also acquire teaching jobs in top dental colleges.

BAMS: BAMS course is considered to be one of the best courses for students who are genuinely interested to study different aspects of Ayurveda and make a career in this field as a doctor, researcher, teacher, lecturer, etc and ready to deal with tough languages like Sanskrit. The course is also economical and cost efficient, its fee is less than MBBS.

BHMS: Homeopathy is considered an alternative to western medicine. Becoming a homeopathic practitioner can be the best option if you believe in its effectiveness. But choose this course only if you are wholeheartedly satisfied in practising it. It is considered to be equivalent to MBBS in terms of difficulty level.

We hope that now you have a clear understanding and approach towards these four courses. Consider speaking to career experts if you still have doubts on choosing a career path.

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
