MBBS age criteria and increasing number of medical seats?

MBBS age criteria and increasing number of medical seats?

Is pursuing medical degree from abroad a victory sign ? Is it worthy for the middle class low income families to go in abroad for medical degree ?

The NMC has found a solution to it by lowering the fees under government quota seats and also by demolishing the age bar mention for entering into MBBS. The NMC has given its recommendation to the Government for the further review on this topic and it has also published a paper on this topic in the National Medical Journal(NMJ).

Many experts are working together on the paper published in the AIIMS , the members involved are Dr Aruna Vanikar (President Under Graduate Medical Board, NMC), with her three colleagues:  Dr M Mintz, Dr D Chakraborty, and Dr Vijayendra Kumar.

Dr Aruna Vanikar stated that “The age limit to appear in the MBBS entrance should not be restricted to 25 years ,instead there should be no age limit for appearing in MBBS entrance exam and also the seats in medicines must be increased so that middle class families will think before sending their children to foreign to pursue medicine“.

In India mostly students in science stream go for MBBS or Bachelors of Surgery , the main reason for this choice is the respect that the profession gets in the society , but in today’s world the profession is losing its respect in the society. It is really very expensive to study MBBS from any colleges and hence when students are not able to get admission into MBBS into prestigious government colleges of India they opt to choose to go to foreign and pursue their dream.

So many people but few doctors :

In India as per surveys the there is 1 doctor for about 1445 people working but this does not follow the norms created by the WHO stating there should be 1 doctor for 1000 people, as the dreams of many students are not filled of pursuing MBBS due to high competition and the very expensive fees charged students do not go for MBBS so the number of students becoming doctors are less.

States like Bihar ,North east India, Nagaland ,etc have very few doctor support with them.

Cost Factor:

There are about 80,312 seats in medical colleges , the fee structure in government colleges is a bit less  but when it comes to the private medical colleges it is about Rs 70 Lakhs  which is not at all affordable for middle class family and thus it is wasteful even to think of  MBBS degree .

NEET exam is conducted by NTA every year and it is one of the most tough entrance exam , more than 18 lakhs students appear for the paper and compete for only few seats , and hardly 5% percents get seats under government quota and rest either changes their mind to go for MBBS or think for moving abroad for practicing medicine . Students move to different countries like Ukraine, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Georgia where they are offered different courses at affordable price.

Uncertain future :

Many students who go abroad and complete their graduation from foreign even they cannot think for a stable future , it is still uncertain . Many students who came back to India in Russian – Ukraine war were pursuing course from Ukraine that has no scope in India but it has scope in Ukraine but these students now cannot go to Ukraine again to find jobs related to their degree , and are facing issues now .

Solution to these problems:

So the solution given by NMC was to minimize the fees of MBBS in India and increasing number of seats under government and to remove the age criteria for MBBS entrance exam.

Some suggestion were also given on :

Improving the quality of education provided in the institutes

The difference of level of education given at private and  other government colleges must be checked and reduced

Remove age criteria to appear in MBBS exam

Client Testimonial

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
