Punjab government notifies details for MBBS/BDS Admissions 2020-21

Fee Structure

Students of all spheres all around the country have been awaiting a better insight into their education. Those applying for colleges for the academic session of 2020-21 have been struggling with postponing exams, uncertainty and anxiety. Information is slowly being given out and actions are being taken to relieve students and continue activity – one of which is a new structure to the admission procedures for MBBS and BDS applicants in Punjab, primarily catering to its fee.

Before delving deeper, an overview of the number of seats being offered for some major colleges offering MBBS is as follows –

  • Government Medical College, Amritsar: 250
  • GMC, Patiala: 225
  • Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot: 125
  • Mohali Medical College: 100 (to be upgraded to 220)

An official notification has now been issued by the Punjab government on the admission details and commencement of its MBBS and BDS courses for the session of 2020-21. The key highlight of this notification has been a course fee hike of a staggering 75% for all MBBS courses, and has been notified to all government and private medical and dental facilities and institutions.

The notification clearly declares a fee of INR 7.8 lakhs for students pursuing MBBS at the government colleges of Amritsar, Patiala and Faridkot whereas students pursuing at the private college including Dayanand Medical College (DMC), Ludhiana; Adesh Medical University, Bhatinda and the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar; will have to pay a fee of Rs 18.5 lakhs for its government quota seats. If that feels expensive, the management quota fees of the same colleges stand at Rs. 47.7 lakhs.

Sri Guru Ram Das University ups it one more step taking its fee hike to 47.7 lakhs for both Open Merit and Minority students and $110,000 (equates to INR 81 lakhs) for its NRI seats. It is not just the competition that’s tough now, Covid-19 has brought massive changes to the economic structure posing further challenges.

Similarly, BDS courses have also seen an increment with a few of Rs 3.9 lakhs for governments colleges. Government seats in a private college now cost Rs 7.6 lakhs and Rs. 10.3 lakhs under the management quota, whereas the NRI fee stands at $44,000 (equates to INR 33 lakhs).

Some rules stand unchanged – Christian Medical College (CMC) and Christian Dental college (CDC), Ludhiana shall keep following their own admission police as mentioned as per the Supreme Court’s order and sticks to its age-old law of 25 years. As a consequence, CMC and CDC can both charge a little lower at 6.6 lakhs per year for the students enrolling into their MBBS course and Rs 2.2 lakhs for its BDS courses for students enrolling into the session of 2021, being applicable to both open-merit and minority quota students. Nonetheless, these colleges too see a 10% increase in its fee every year as a consequence of the notification.

The State of Medical Sciences at Mohali is slightly at exception that have not been enlisted in the notification. Although the primary reason for it is that Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences still awaits approval from the Medical Council of India, has a pending recruitment office and also awaits approval or an LOP (Letter of Permission) to conduct classes yet. However, chances are that as the proceedings follow, this university will also fall under similar rules and structures yet there may also be hope for an exception.

Irrespective of the financial challenges brought upon, most students still have the opportunity to seek financial aid and not let the fire within them die down!

Client Testimonial

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
