The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 continues to reshape the Indian education system, and by the 2026 admission cycle, several changes are expected to be fully implemented across schools, colleges, and universities. These updates aim to make learning more flexible, multidisciplinary, and skill-oriented. Here is a detailed look at the key NEP 2020 updates that will impact 2026 admissions.
By 2026, most states will have completely shifted from the 10+2 system to the 5+3+3+4 curricular structure:
Foundation Stage: Nursery to Grade 2
Preparatory Stage: Grades 3–5
Middle Stage: Grades 6–8
Secondary Stage: Grades 9–12
Nursery and primary admissions will align with the new age-based entry rules.
Schools will follow redesigned, play-based and skill-based curricula.
The NEP has introduced biannual board exams to reduce pressure and allow students to improve their scores.
Students may get two chances to appear for Class 10 and 12 board exams.
Questions will focus more on application, reasoning, and competency, not rote memorization.
CUET is now the standard entrance test for many central, private, and state universities.
More universities are expected to adopt CUET scores for UG admissions.
Weightage for board marks will become limited in many institutions.
UG programs will follow a flexible structure:
1 Year: Certificate
2 Years: Diploma
3 Years: Bachelor’s Degree
4 Years: Bachelor’s Degree with Research
Students can pause and resume their education without losing credits, thanks to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC).
Schools and colleges will emphasize vocational and skill-based learning, making them part of the curriculum and evaluation.
Courses like coding, entrepreneurship, AI, design, robotics, and data science may influence subject choices for higher classes.
Some universities may consider skill portfolios for admissions.
Colleges will offer more flexibility in choosing majors and minors.
A student can pursue:
B.Sc. Physics with a minor in Music
BBA with a minor in Data Science
BA Economics with a minor in Psychology
This approach aims to create well-rounded learners.
NEP promotes regional languages and makes learning them essential.
Schools may offer more bilingual teaching.
Competitive exams may add additional vernacular language support.
The B.Ed. program is being replaced with a 4-year integrated teacher education program (ITEP).
Admissions for teaching courses in 2026 will happen under the new format.
NEP 2020 brings major educational reforms, and by the 2026 admission cycle, students will experience a more flexible, skill-driven, and learner-centric system. From a new curricular structure to biannual board exams and multidisciplinary degrees, the education landscape is evolving rapidly

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
