MBBS Admissions 2025 — What to Expect in Round 3: Latest Updates & Insights

The third round of MBBS (NEET UG 2025) counselling is now underway across India, with many aspirants eagerly awaiting seat allotment and opportunities to upgrade into better colleges. With new seats being added and earlier rounds leaving significant vacancies, Round 3 brings renewed hope — but also uncertainties. Here’s a comprehensive update on what to expect, key changes, and expert projections for this crucial round.

1. Major Seat Additions & Matrix Revisions

  • The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the NEET-UG 2025 seat matrix by adding 9,075 new MBBS seats, while removing 456 seats due to court cases, bringing the total to 1,26,600 seats.

  • During Round 3 counselling, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has further added around 198 seats across ESIC and deemed medical colleges.

  • In specific states, seats are being increased mid-process: e.g. 138 seats were added to the Round 3 seat matrix across multiple ESIC and government medical colleges.

  • Some sources report that 18 new medical colleges plus 2,720 MBBS seats have been approved for inclusion in Round 3.

Implication: These additions will ease pressure on tight ranks and create more “last-minute” opportunities, especially in states and categories where demand was lower.

2. Vacancies & State-Level Trends

  • In Maharashtra, after Round 2, 636 MBBS seats (168 in government + 468 in private colleges) and 891 BDS seats were unfilled.

  • For Round 3 in Maharashtra, a total of 891 MBBS/BDS seats will be up for grabs.

  • Many states still reveal significant vacated seats due to students declining or failing to report.

3. Timeline Changes & Choice-Filling Extensions

  • The choice filling for Round 3 was initially scheduled to close on October 13, but due to the addition of new seats, MCC extended the deadline to October 16, 2025 (11:59 PM).

  • The seat allotment result is expected on October 18, 2025.

  • Reporting/joining to allotted colleges is to take place between October 19 and 27, 2025.

4. NRI Quota Conversions & Document Scrutiny

  • In Round 3, 363 candidates have been provisionally converted to the NRI quota (from Indian status), subject to document verification.

  • Maharashtra’s CET Cell has flagged 152 aspirants for suspected document discrepancies (“incorrect or inauthentic”) amid a suspected seat-blocking scandal. These candidates have been served show-cause notices.  State CET bodies are stepping up verification efforts in Round 3 to curb misuse and ensure fairness.

5. What This Means for Aspirants — Expectations & Strategy

🔹 Cut-offs Could Drop (Slightly)

With seat additions and many vacancies, cut-offs in certain states and categories may ease, offering opportunities for candidates who were just below previous thresholds.

🔹 Better Upgrade Chances

Students who secured a seat in earlier rounds and opted for upgrades now have better chances since the pool of vacant seats is larger and more distributed.

🔹 Be Strategic with Choices

  • Fill fresh preferences in Round 3 (previous preferences may not carry over in many states).

  • Target newly added seats and lesser-known colleges first — they tend to have lower competition.

  • Keep backup options ready for states or quotas with historically tight competition.

🔹 Document Readiness Is More Critical

Given increased verification and scrutiny, ensure all your credentials, identity proofs, NRI documents (if applicable), etc., are in order to avoid disqualification.

Client Testimonial

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
